Information about our theme

In this theme we will be linking in geography and history based learning, looking at the local area and then at The Stone Age.  There will be a strong focus on posing questions and asking: Who? What? Where? We will be looking at the work of L.S. Lowry and trying out some Stone Age cave art. We will be using laptops for research on the water cycle and incorporating some poetry on water. The maths curriculum will be delivered in daily lessons, but we will also be using maths skills across the curriculum where appropriate.

In Art/Design Technology/Music we will be:

  • using sketch books to record observations
  • drawing and painting in the style of L.S. Lowry
  • looking at Stone Age cave art
  • making Stone Age style pots and tools out of clay
  • experimenting with paper folding and Book Art techniques
  • listening to music with a water theme

In Maths we will be:

  • comparing and ordering numbers up to 1000.
  • recognising the place value of each digit in a 3 digit number .
  • adding and subtracting numbers using written methods
  • using inverses to check answers
  • recalling multiplication and division facts.
  • adding and subtracting fractions
  • recognising and describing 3D shapes.
  • measuring perimeters of 2D shapes.
  • telling time on digital and analogue clocks
  • adding and subtracting amounts of money to give change.

In Literacy we will be:

  • using inverted commas to punctuate speech.
  • using commas.
  • learning how to use an apostrophe.
  • using paragraphs in our writing.
  • using a greater range of vocabulary to enhance our writing.
  • writing story settings and character descriptions using “George’s Marvellous Medicine” for inspiration.
  • writing non-fiction pieces on the local area for a class book.
  • writing diaries for a Stone Age child after reading the book,“Stone Age Boy”.
  • writing water themed poetry.

 

In Science we will be:

  • identifying rocks by appearance and their physical properties
  • comparing and grouping rocks
  • learning about fossils and how they are formed
  • investigating how soils are made

Knowledge and Understanding of the World

In Geography/History we will be:

  • describing key aspects of the water cycle
  • identifying physical and human characteristics of the local area
  • looking at the local history of Glossop
  • identifying changes made in the Stone Age period, looking at tools and farming.

In PHSE/R.E we will be:

  • reflecting on our feelings and those of others.
  • exploring the question: “What makes a leader worth following?”

In ICT we will be:

  • creating tables and bar graphs of data.
  • combining text and pictures.
  • using search engines to gain information.
  • thinking about how to stay safe on-line.
  • looking at different ways people communicate electronically

In Physical Development we will be:

  • having games taught by the PAS Team on Mondays, where the focus will be on working as a team,  developing communication and leadership skills.
  • having a PE lesson taught by Mr Montgomery on Wednesdays

PLEASE ENSURE RELEVANT KITS ARE ALWAYS IN SCHOOL FOR THESE LESSONS.

 

How you can help your child:

  • Hear him/her read regularly and talk with him/her about what he/she has read, discussing unfamiliar vocabulary, characters and story plot.
  • Support him/her with learning spellings and times tables.
  • Ensure he/she completes other homework tasks appropriately, and hands them in on time.
  • Ensure he/she has the relevant PE/games kits in school. (PE/games is on Monday and Wednesday)
