Dear Parents,

I cannot believe how quickly this term is going events that seemed to be a long way in the future are nearly upon us.

Today is a Glossop wide Bug Busting Day.  All the schools in Glossop are asking everyone to check their heads tonight and treat the head lice if they are found.  If we all do it on the same night we stand a better chance against them.  The problem is if the children here are cleared on Thursday and then they go to dance or football on Saturday and meet up with a child from another school they could be re-infected and bring them back to us.  You get the picture.  Your child should be bringing home a detection comb to help.  The best way to check for head lice is to wash the person’s hair put conditioner on and before you rinse it off use the comb to look for lice.  If you find a live louse – do not panic!  You can treat them in two ways; by using an insecticide treatment available from chemists or supermarkets or by combing.  If you use an insecticide you must retreat as it instructs or else you will get rid of the live lice but not the eggs so when they hatch the child (or adult) will still have lice.  The combing method is to use conditioner as above, make sure you get rid of all the live lice then repeat every four days until you get two consecutive clear combings.  Is your head itching now? Mine is.

Tomorrow is Red Nose Day.  We are having fun and raising money in several ways:

Kestrels will be leading a Red Nose Day assembly do join us if you can.

The children can come in non-uniform – something red.  We would ask for a donation of at least £1 for this.

The children can come to school with a funny decorated face and enter the funny face competition.  Again we would ask for a donation of at least £1 for this.

The children can bid to decorate a member of staff’s face (Mrs. Hillier, Mr Warburton, Ms Lee, Ms Nichols, Mrs McLaren or Mrs Littlehailes).  The children need to bring an envelope, or piece of paper with the name of the staff member their name and their bid.  We have explained to the children that the bid needs to be an amount they will actually pay!  The children could club together to put in a joint bid.  The child who puts in the highest bid for each member of staff will get to decorate that staff member’s face.

Next week is parent’s evening week.  The staff are doing the tricky sorting out of appointments today so you should receive your appointment time tonight or tomorrow.

If you haven’t sent in your order for a class photo and you would like one the orders are being picked up tomorrow, so it would need to be in first thing.

I hope the raffle tickets are proving to be a hit with all your friends and family.  If you need more tickets they are available from the office.

School run clubs finish this Friday until Monday 20th April.

Dear Parents,

There is such a lot to celebrate this week and more to come.

A huge well done to the Sportshall Athletics Squad who have made it through to the county final.  They will be going down to Derby on 24th March to represent the High Peak.

The children did an amazing job on enterprise afternoon and raised just over £300.  Not only will this make a huge difference to the villages in Bangladesh we are supporting but the children learned a lot.  I was very impressed with their team work, problem solving and communication skills.  These are all the skills employers say are lacking in school leavers. I am confident our children are developing them.

Today is World Book Day.  Thank you again to Lily Barlow who donated her pirate experience to St Luke’s I am sure the children will enjoy a piratical day.  Your child should be bringing home a book token which can be exchanged for a special World book day Book or used as £1 off a book.  This is a present to the children from the booksellers of this country.  We are very grateful to them.

As if that wasn’t enough excitement for one week Saturday sees the choir singing with Kinder Choir.  They will meet at Buxton Pavillion Garden’s Octagon at 9.50 in uniform with their packed lunch.  Please make sure they have had a drink and a good breakfast as singing is hard work.  We will look after the children until after the concert that starts at 3.00.  Tickets should be sent home today, if they haven’t got to you let us know.  Thank you to everyone who offered lifts I have sent home requests as needed.  If you haven’t managed to make contact with the family involved please let us know.  The office will be open tomorrow.

Tomorrow 6th March is an INSET day when the school is closed to children for staff training.

Next Monday 9th March we have a short parents meeting for those going on the residential to Whitby at 6pm.

Thursday 12th March is going to be a Glossop wide bug busting day.  We will be asking all the families in Glossop to check their heads for head lice and treat them if found.  If we all do it together there is more chance of us reducing the incidence of them.

Thursday 12th sees the Peregrines taking part in a Glossop dance session at Glossopdale School.

Friday 13th is Red Nose Day wear something red or make your face funny or both.

Kestrels Class will be leading our assembly on Friday 13th please join us if you can.  It is also the gymnastics competition on that afternoon and the next fixture for the girls football team.

You should get a parents evening letter today.  Please fill in as many boxes as possible as it can be very hard to accommodate everyone.  Please note the times for Kite’s class are different on the Tuesday as Mrs McLaren has an appointment elsewhere.  She will be available 1.15 – 2.45pm and on Wednesday at the same times as everyone else.

I have had a plea from Glossopdale Food Bank.  They are running low on food if anyone could send into school canned or dried food they would be very grateful.

Dear Parents,

We have had another busy week:

  • Education Sunday was celebrated in church. We thank the parish for holding us in their thoughts.
  • The girl’s football team made a good start to their tournament by winning one match and drawing one. The England Men’s cricket team would love to have a results line like that!
  • There was a very successful and red disco. Thank you to everyone who helped make this such a good night.
  • The Year 4 & 5 s had their last session with Katharine Moore who has been very impressed with the quality of the singing from all the children, both those who can take part in the concert and those who are not able to.
  • Class photos have been taken. I do hope you will be pleased with the results.
  • Kestrels have had a good explore around Glossop. This is for their work on ‘Me and My World’ and for their entry into The Thank You Film Awards. The children wanted to say thank you for their town.

Congratulations to the Sports Hall Athletics Squad who have made it through to the High Peak final next Wednesday.  We wish them lots of luck.

It is the Bag 2 School collection tomorrow, 27th February.  Please bring in your bag of unwanted clothes by 9am as the pick up is scheduled for the morning.  We are very grateful to you for joining in with this as it raises several hundreds of pounds every year for school fund.

On Tuesday the Netball Team will be taking part in the Glossop Tournament.  We hope they have a great time.  I am sure they will show the same sportsmanship as all our teams.  The sporting way they conduct themselves is often commented upon.

Wednesday 4th is a very busy day with the choir having a rehearsal at Hayfield Primary School in the morning.  The athletics squad are competing in the afternoon and it is Enterprise Day.  I do hope you will be able to support the children’s work by sending them in with a little money to spend at the stalls and or attending the event.  The children will be running the stalls between 2 – 4.

Thursday 5th is World Book Day.  This year we have a pirate theme as we have a visit from a pirate booked curtesy of Lily Barlow who has donated her prize of a pirate visit to school.  Please send the children to school in pirate clothes or with a pirate book or just clutching a black spot!

Remember Friday 6th March is an INSET day when school will be closed to the children.

Saturday 7th is the day of the choir concert.  If you haven’t yet got your tickets to see the choir at Buxton please call into the office.  We would love to have lots of supporters whether or not your child is singing.

Dear Parents,

It seems a long time ago now but the end of last half term was a very successful one.  The Sports Hall Athletics teams did very well.  They worked well as a team, thought tactically and came first.  Congratulations to them.  House verse speaking was great.  The children did such a good job.  It was fascinating to see how the different houses tackled the same poem and how they presented their own poem.  Well done to Willow house who won the competition and thank you to you who helped the children learn the poems.

The children have come back ready to learn having had a good break.  Lots of them have been enthusiastically writing prayer suggestions for St Luke’s Church.  It is Education Sunday this Sunday and the children’s ideas will form part of the service.  The service is at 10am and everyone is welcome.

Tomorrow, 20th February, Harriers will be leading our Assembly.  Eagles will be leading it on Friday 27th.  As always, everyone is very welcome to join us.

Tomorrow is a very busy day because the Girls Football team start their tournament, we wish them luck.  It is also the PTA disco 5 – 6.30.

Remember it is class photos on Wednesday 25th February, so it is guaranteed your child will get breakfast and toothpaste down their front that morning!

I sent out a new dates list on Monday because there have been a number of changes.  If you have not received a copy please let us know.

On the dates list is an event we haven’t done before the House Enterprise Afternoon Wednesday 4th March.  This is an opportunity for the children to learn about finance and budgeting, to work together as a team and to raise money for others.  The money raised will go to a village in Bangladesh to be seed money for them to start their own businesses. If they can afford to stay in the village it will give their children a better start in life because they won’t be living in slums and they will be able to go to school.  These are the arrangements:

  • On the afternoon the stalls will be open from 2 – 4. You are invited to come at any point within those times.
  • The children will be given the opportunity to visit the stalls with their housemates between 2 and 3. If you would like to support the event by sending them in with some money to spend I know the children would be grateful.
  • The children can be picked up at the normal time from their normal door. We would ask that you don’t try to take the children from the hall because we need to be sure everyone is accounted for.
  • If you would like to visit the stalls with your child after school it would help make the event a success.
  • Some of the older children will be needed to staff the stalls after school. If you are happy for them to volunteer to do this do let them know. Once the rotas have been sorted we will send letters home with those who have volunteered.
